Google Analytics integration

Overview

The Google Analytics integration sends chat-widget activity from your website to your own Google Analytics 4 (GA4) property. You can then see how many visitors open the chat, start a conversation and send messages, alongside the rest of your website data.

The widget sends three events:

Event When it's sent
atomicx_widget_open A visitor opens the chat widget.
atomicx_conversation_start A new conversation starts.
atomicx_message_sent A visitor's message is sent successfully.

Events never include message text, contact details or conversation IDs. The integration doesn't send page views, and it doesn't track use of the AtomicX Chat admin dashboard.

Before you start, you need:

  • A plan that includes integrations. If Integrations isn't in the left menu, see Plans and subscription.
  • The Owner or Admin role in AtomicX Chat.
  • A GA4 property with a web data stream for the website where your chat widget is embedded, and at least Editor access to it.

Steps

Step 1: Copy your Measurement ID from Google Analytics

  1. Sign in to Google Analytics and select your property.
  2. Click Admin (gear icon, bottom left).
  3. Under Data collection and modification, click Data streams, then click your website's stream.
  4. Copy the Measurement ID in the top right. It starts with G-, for example G-AB12CD34EF.

Google's guide: Find your Measurement ID.

Step 2: Enter it in AtomicX Chat

  1. Go to Integrations → Integrations and click Connect on the Google Analytics card.
  2. Paste the ID into GA4 Measurement ID.
  3. Tick Enable widget tracking.
  4. Click Save. You'll see Settings saved. Reload your website's widget to apply the change.

The card on the Integrations page now shows Enabled. Tracking starts the next time the widget loads on your website, so reload any open pages.

Step 3: Send a test event

  1. On the same page, click Send test event. This button is only available after you've saved with tracking enabled, and it uses the saved ID.
  2. In Google Analytics, go to Admin → DebugView (under Data display), or open Reports → Realtime.
  3. Look for an event named atomicx_test. It usually appears within a minute.

The message Test event queued in this browser only means your browser sent the event. It is not proof that Google received it, so always confirm it in Google Analytics. If it doesn't appear, turn off ad blockers or privacy extensions for the test and try again.

Step 4: Check real widget events

  1. Open your website in a new browser window and open the chat widget.
  2. Send a message.
  3. In Reports → Realtime, check Event count by Event name for atomicx_widget_open, atomicx_conversation_start and atomicx_message_sent.

Events show up in Realtime within seconds. Standard reports can take 24 to 48 hours to include them.

Step 5 (optional): Mark key events

To count chats as conversions in Google Analytics:

  1. Go to Admin → Events once the events have appeared at least once.
  2. Find atomicx_conversation_start (or whichever event you want to count) and turn on Mark as key event.

The widget uses the Google tag consent settings already on your website. It never grants consent by itself. If your website doesn't already load the Google tag, the widget loads it with analytics and ad cookies denied, so events are sent without cookies until your consent banner (Consent Mode) grants consent. Set up your banner to load before the chat widget. When a visitor declines analytics cookies, Google Analytics may drop or model their events, so your numbers can be lower than the actual chat activity.

Troubleshooting

Problem What to do
Enter a valid GA4 Measurement ID… when saving The ID must start with G- followed by letters and numbers. Universal Analytics IDs (UA-…) and Google Tag Manager IDs (GTM-…) won't work.
Send test event is greyed out Tick Enable widget tracking, click Save, and make sure the ID in the box matches the saved one.
No events from your website Reload the page with the widget, and check that the widget is embedded on the same site as the data stream. Ad blockers, browser privacy settings and declined consent can all stop events.
You want to stop tracking Untick Enable widget tracking and click Save. The change applies once the widget reloads on each visitor's page.
