Chat disclosure and visitor consent

Overview

The Chat Disclosure is a short notice the chat widget shows before a conversation starts. It tells visitors that the chat is recorded and may be processed by AI and your service providers. Visitors must click I agree before they can type, and nothing they type is sent until they do.

Privacy laws such as the California Invasion of Privacy Act (CIPA) and the EU's GDPR expect visitors to be told this up front. Showing a clear notice and keeping a record of acceptance is the usual first step. It doesn't replace your privacy policy or legal advice.

When a visitor clicks I agree, the time and the exact text they accepted are saved with the conversation. In Conversations, the conversation shows a Disclosure accepted badge with the time; hover over it to see the text.

Steps

  1. Go to Chat → Configurations and click Edit on your chat widget configuration.
  2. Under Additional Settings, find Chat Disclosure.
  3. Enter your notice. You can add a link with [link text](https://...), for example: This chat is recorded and may be processed by AI and our service providers to answer you. See our [Privacy policy](https://example.com/privacy).
  4. Click Update Configuration.
  5. Open your website (or Chat test), open the chat and check that the notice and I agree button appear.

New configurations start with a standard notice. Configurations created before this setting existed have no notice until you add one. To stop showing a notice, clear the box and save.

What visitors see

  • When they open the chat, the notice appears with an I agree button. The message box stays disabled until they click it.
  • After they agree, the chat starts as usual.
  • The browser remembers the agreement, so the notice isn't shown again on later chats, unless you change the text. Changed text is shown once more so visitors agree to the new version.
  • If you've added a translation for the widget's language, the translated notice is shown. See Chat languages and translations.

Tips

  • Link to your privacy policy and name the kinds of services involved (AI, live chat, CRM), so visitors know who sees their messages.
  • Keep the notice to one or two sentences. Long notices push the chat off small screens.
  • If you use the Google Analytics integration, analytics is cookieless until your consent banner allows it.
  • SMS, WhatsApp and Slack conversations don't show this notice.
