Slack integration

Overview

Connect Slack so your team can follow website chats in Slack and step in when a visitor needs a person. With Widget Sync on, each new widget conversation is posted as a thread in a Slack channel you choose. Your workflow keeps answering the visitor. When a teammate replies in the thread or clicks Take Over, the conversation switches to that person.

You create your own Slack app, so you'll need to be a Slack workspace admin (or work with one). Setup takes about 10 minutes.

Steps

Step 1: Start the connection in AtomicX Chat

  1. Go to Chat → Channels and click Add Channel. (Clicking Connect on the Slack card under Integrations → Integrations takes you to the same page.)
  2. In Add Channel Connection, click Slack.
  3. Keep this window open. It has a setup guide, How to create the Slack app, that lists the exact URLs to paste into Slack. Copy them from the guide rather than typing them.

Step 2: Create the Slack app

  1. In a new tab, go to api.slack.com/apps and click Create New App → From scratch.
  2. Give the app a name, for example AtomicX Chat, and choose your workspace.
  3. Open OAuth & Permissions. Under Redirect URLs, add the redirect URL shown in the setup guide, then click Save URLs.
  4. On the same page, under Scopes → Bot Token Scopes, add these scopes: app_mentions:read, channels:history, channels:read, chat:write, groups:history, groups:read, im:history, im:read, users:read.
  5. Open Event Subscriptions and turn Enable Events on. Paste the events Request URL from the setup guide. Slack checks it right away and should show it as verified.
  6. Under Subscribe to bot events, add message.channels, message.groups, message.im and app_mention. Click Save Changes.
  7. Open Interactivity & Shortcuts and turn Interactivity on. Paste the interactions Request URL from the setup guide and save. The Take Over button won't work without this.

Step 3: Enter your credentials and approve the app

  1. In Slack, open Basic Information → App Credentials.
  2. Copy the Client ID, Client Secret and Signing Secret into the matching fields in AtomicX Chat. You need all three.
  3. Click Connect to Slack. Slack asks you to allow the app in your workspace. Approve it.
  4. Slack sends you back to the Channels page, where you'll see Channel connected successfully! Your Slack workspace is now linked. The new card shows Active.

If you closed Slack before approving, the card shows PendingSetup. Click Complete OAuth on the card to finish.

Step 4: Invite the app to your channel

In Slack, open the channel where you want conversations to appear and type /invite @AtomicX Chat, using your app's name. The app can only post in channels it has been invited to.

Step 5: Turn on Widget Sync

  1. Back on Chat → Channels, click Configure on your Slack card.
  2. Under Widget Sync, check Enable widget-to-Slack sync.
  3. Choose a channel from Target Slack Channel. If the list can't load, you'll see a message asking you to enter the channel ID. In Slack you'll find it at the bottom of the channel's details, and it starts with C.
  4. Leave Include "Take Over" button checked if you want a one-click way to take over conversations.
  5. Optionally, set the routing options at the top of the window:
    • Default Workflow: pick one of your workflows, or leave None (tenant default). Conversations that start in Slack are linked to the widget configuration that runs this workflow. Messages sent to the app from Slack get an automatic acknowledgment, not an AI answer.
    • Monitored Channels: enter the channel IDs to listen to, separated by commas (for example C12345, C67890), or leave it empty to listen everywhere the app is. Direct messages and your Target Slack Channel are always included.
  6. Click Save Configuration.

Step 6: Test it

  1. Start a chat on your website or with the test chat. See Test your chat.
  2. In Slack, a new thread should appear with the visitor's first message.
  3. Click Take Over. The visitor sees that you joined the chat. Your replies in the thread now appear in the visitor's chat window.

Tips

  • As soon as someone replies in a thread, that conversation switches to human mode, even if nobody clicked Take Over. Only reply in threads you intend to handle.
  • To use a different Slack app, first Disconnect the current connection, then add Slack again with the new credentials.
  • If Connect to Slack shows Platform redirect URI is not configured, contact support.
